Oscar DeLaughter, 18, is a recent graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, Texas. Having just completed his first EP, Oscar says he’s been a work in progress ever since he could remember.

Maybe it started around age 4, when he climbed his way onto a drum kit when no one was looking and began to play a beat in front of about 2,000 people.

“I loved how it made me feel,” he says. “Music was the only thing I could ever see myself doing, so I started getting involved with different instruments at home.”

By age 6, Oscar had discovered his love for old music — everything from R&B and funk to pop, new wave, and even big-band music. When he first heard the song “Tighten Up,” by Archie Bell and the Drells, he realized he also loved to dance.

He was obsessed with the “Grease” soundtrack, and he spent countless hours watching all the Michael Jackson YouTube videos he could find. He also adored Elvis, David Bowie, and Elton John; even Frank Sinatra was on heavy rotation. He loved the vocal dynamics of Queen, and the passion and fury of James Brown.

Around age 12, with fifty bucks saved up, Oscar entered the studio for the first time and created a couple of songs with his friend Chris Gordon (Christheartist). He got the itch, and has continued to write and record ever since.

“The Self-Titled EP,” without question, takes us on a refreshing, eclectic trip, where a young artist tests the waters and decides to dive in.

“I like all different styles of music,” Oscar says. “So, I’m just having fun and seeing where it takes me.”
